Autumn In The Valleys

Without a doubt, autumn is my favourite season, but more so now that we live here in the Welsh Valleys. Of course there is beauty all around, especially with the seasonal shift, but being surrounded by the greenery here as opposed to the many buildings I was surrounded by when living in London has opened my eyes to the beauty of autumn. We have been living in the valleys for three autumns now but I would say this has been my favourite by far, largely for the fact that it is the first autumn in which I have been truly able to capture all that surrounds us on a quality camera.

I've shared untold pictures of how autumn arrived here in South Wales as well as how it has treated us since then, but I haven't shown any pictures of how the trees on the valley hills look now that autumn has fully set in. I'm quite surprised about that as they are actually my favourite thing about the local landscape. Unfortunately, it is hard to capture the beauty of them on camera as it doesn't quite come across as well as it does in person, but I wanted to share a few photos I've taken over the past month or so anyway.

I love the variety of colour that runs through the trees, and against the backdrop of a clear blue sky the sight has quite an affect on you. My favourite patches are those that have multiple colours throughout, such as the fourth image below shows.

Clear blue skies are my favourite as they truly highlight the beauty of the hills, however a typical autumn day in South Wales doesn't look like that. Wales is well known for the lush greenery - in fact when family visits from outside the area, particularly cities, they always comment on how green it is here - but that greenery comes with a price. The price being rain, and lots of it! Especially in the colder months, a typical day weather wise here is full of fog and rain. So the valley hills, more often than not, look like the last few snapshots below.

I assure you, there are trees under there!

What does your local landscape look like?

  2. Wonderful views and photos! Blue skies look of course lovely, but I find the foggy landscapes very interesting and beautiful... perhaps because we have fog rather seldom. :) In these days it's raining here and almost all the deciduous trees have already lost their leaves.

    1. They really are. Whilst the blue days are my favourite, I've grown accustom the foggy days and quite enjoy them now - they're great when cosying indoors! I hope the rain lets up there!

  3. Beautiful shots of the fantastic nature. The sunny shots, as well as the misty ones, all show autumn at its best.

    1. I like that - a beautiful day without beautiful weather. I think often times we think the weather makes a day, when it really doesn't.
